February was mild and very wet. The average daily maximum temperatures were about 1C milder than normal but only the ninth mildest in my records. The highest temperature was 11.5C on the 4th, which is not at all unusual. There was no very cold spell and only two air frosts of -1.3C on both the 6th and 7th. It was extremely windy throughout the month, making it feel colder than the temperature was showing.

The total rainfall for February was 180.4mm, which is the largest February rainfall total in my 34 years of records for Scotby. However it was not even close to being the wettest month in my records, which have several months with totals well over 200mm. The wettest day was the 9th with 23.4mm and there were five other days with over 10mm. These are not large daily totals but the rain was relentless and there were only two dry days in the month. There was widespread flooding in many areas, fortunately not directly affecting Carlisle, which experienced a ‘near miss’ as the water almost over-topped the defences.
