May was a warm and dry month. The average daily maximum temperature was 19.5C which is almost 3C warmer than normal and the warmest May I have recorded. However the warmest day was ‘only’ 25.6C and there have been many May days warmer than that in Scotby over the last 30 years. The high average daily maximum can be explained by the fact that almost every day in the last two weeks had a high of more than 20C. Night time temperatures were mostly rather cool, around 4 to 7C with one frost on the 1st of -0.6C.

Total rainfall for May was 33.8mm, which is about half the long term average. Most of the rain fell during the second week. It was mainly dry from the 17th to the end of the month with a welcome 5.8mm on the 25th. May is usually a fairly dry month and there have been at least 6 drier than this year over the last 30 years.
